Following up on What to Plant in May, I wanted to share another round up of flowers and herbs to plant in June and July. A lot of you mentioned you brought the list to your local nursery/garden shop which made me so happy to hear. Now more than ever gardening has been my therapy. I have very little free time these days, but when I do, it’s usually spent gardening. We’re just starting to see peonies, roses and nepeta bloom around the yard, and we did a few planters with herbs. Before I get into planting ideas and recommendations I wanted to share some things I use for plant food, compost, etc. Some of this is local to my area but if you ask your local garden shop they can point you in the right direction. For mulch and compost I am a big fan of Coast of Maine. Everything is organic and we’ve always had great results using their products. We also have our own compost (I talked more about how to start your own in this post). For plant food I’m a big fan of EarthPods (for indoor and outdoor) and Organic Neptune’s Harvest. For my roses I use Rose-tone.
What to Plant in June and July
June
Dahlia tubers (they can also be planted in May but they like warmer temps)
Moon Flower (fragrant at night, blooms with the moon)
Mandevilla
Hibiscus (plant with delphinium)
Lantana Phormium
Delphinium
Dianthus (plant with roses, hollyhocks)
Verbena (plant with dill, cilantro)
Elephant Ear (Great for shade)
July
Black Eyed Susans (plant with hibiscus, coneflower)
Lantana
Zinnias
Coneflower – attracts pollinators (plant with bee balm)
Aster – for fall blooms
Plant Biennial seeds of these, for bloom next year
