5 Simple & Stylish Ways to Decorate for Fall

I am a big fan of seasonal decor, but in a way that’s not wasteful and doesn’t cost a ton of money (ok so about that last part, how much is too much to spend on mums and gourds, asking for a friend?). But you really don’t need to spend a lot to make your space feel cozy, festive and stylish for fall. We don’t have a ton of storage space so I like to use decor that is super functional and doesn’t need to be put away in boxes at the end of the season. Think about the things you already have and how you might be able to use them in a new or different way, and of course a few pumpkins and mums never hurt. Here are five simple and stylish ways to decorate for fall. Feel free to share any other creative and festive ways to get in the spirit of the season.

One. cozy textures

Think sheepskins, plaid blankets and faux fur throws (just discovered my favorite throw blanket is now Oeko-Tek certified). Drape them on chairs and couches, put one at the edge of your bed or store some in a woven basket in your living space.

two. taper and scented candles

I have a mild obsession with candles but especially in the fall and winter they add such a cozy element to your space. I tend to lean towards more subtle scents like this non-toxic Fern + Moss candle from Brooklyn Candle Studio. I always have this Follain candle on hand, it’s subtle but heavenly. These smokeless, fragrance-free tapers would be stunning on a dining table or mantle.

three. USE neutral tones with subtle pops of color

I love white, blue, green and pale orange pumpkins and gourds as decor, both outdoors and inside (bonus, you can compost them at the end of the season). With subtle pops of color from mums or dahlias it’s festive without feeling tacky. Add a textured wreath in a neutral tone like dried herbs, pampas or a dried wheat bundle.

four. put accessories on display

A super simple and easy way to make your space feel more seasonal is to utilize your accessories. This is particularly great for those of you with small spaces. Leave your tote bags, hats, scarves and boots on display and you’ll have both easy access and functional decor. I just ordered these maple shaker peg racks because they’re so affordable and will look great for hanging storage in our mudroom and front entrance.

five. Forage for decor touches

Get more than fresh air on your morning or evening walks. Bring a pair of scissors or clippers with you to snip dried reeds, branches, flowers, pods, or cattails. These dried bits look beautiful tucked into neutral, earthenware vases and cost nothing extra. You’ll be surprised how stunning some of your favorite plants and flowers look this time of year.
