Winter Capsule Wardrobe

I’m so excited to share my winter capsule wardrobe. I imagine there’s many of you with mixed feelings about the season. The thing is I actually do love winter. I love the seasons, which is why I always knew I wanted to move back to New England. I guess my relationship with winter is love/hate, as is the case for many of us in the Northeast (and other places with long winters). For the first few months it’s fun, the first snow, chilly days by the fire, the coziness of the season, I love it all. By March I’m moving into my hate part of the relationship, but let’s not worry about that now, we’re here to talk about my favorite items for a winter capsule. I like to keep my seasonal capsules small and focus on the pieces that I get the most wear out of on a regular basis. My main capsule (also below) along with my fall capsule, have lots of complimentary pieces to this one. I’ve also focused on pieces that are ethically and/or sustainably made. For this capsule I also shared some outfit ideas which I’ve included below the item descriptions.

CLOSED WINNERS HAVE BEEN CONTACTED***I love to celebrate my capsules with a giveaway. Enter to win one of three $200 giftcards to Everlane by commenting below with your favorite thing from the capsule. Winners will be randomly chosen Friday 11/8.***

Winter Capsule Wardrobe

Fisherman Sweater

This fisherman sweater by ethical brand Tradlands made with sustainable materials is also in my recent post on oversized sweaters. It’s cozy and warm with a slightly oversized fit. They also make a cotton version if you’re sensitive to alpaca/wool. I sized up to a large for an extra oversized fit during my pregnancy, otherwise I would have gone with a small.

Thermal Leggings

These sustainably made thermal leggings are a blend of organic cotton and recycled polyester. Another great option to keep you warm and dry, thermal base layer leggings from Patagonia, as well as these Polartec leggings from Athleta and these base layer leggings from L.L. Bean.

Chelsea Boots

These classic chelsea boots from ethical footwear brand Nisolo are also in my round-up of the best winter boots. They’re made with a water resistant leather upper and waterproof rubber soles.

Cashmere Beanie

Hard to beat Everlane’s ReCashmere beanie made from recycled cashmere and wool. I live in cashmere beanies in the winter especially for those days I’m out for a long time and just need something soft and warm on my head. My other favorites are the White & Warren cashmere beanie and Naadam’s ribbed cashmere beanie.

Double Breasted Blazer

I love this oversized blazer from Everlane. It’s flattering, warm and easy to dress up or down. Big enough to fit over sweaters but not overwhelming in shape, and the fabric is still drapey so it’s not stiff. I went with a size 0.

Knit Dress

This knit dress from H&M’s conscious collection looks like the coziest thing ever. This another great style that’s maternity friendly. This cashmere v-neck midi dress from Everlane is also comfortable and warm.

Turtleneck Sweater

This turtleneck sweater from Patagonia is made from recycled cashmere. Everlane’s cashmere turtleneck sweater is on sale for $100 through tomorrow. This affordable oversized turtleneck sweater was included in this recent blog post, perfect length to wear with leggings.

Corduroy Pants

I LIVED in these corduroy pants last year all fall and winter. They are super flattering and warm and I really like the slightly cropped hem, they look great with booties. Amour Vert has a cute pair of cords (currently on sale) and this pair from & Other Stories is so perfect for holiday.

Puffer Coat

A super stylish take on the puffy coat AND it’s made with 100% recycled poly and recycled down. The Ochre color is my favorite. Last year I invested in the Patagonia Down With It Parka which I love (size up) but it’s not going to fit my pregnant this stomach this winter. This recycled nylon puffer from Eileen Fisher (use code SAVENOW for up to $100 off) is perfect because it’s super roomy but still flattering and will fit me this year and beyond (recommend sizing down, I have xxs/xs).

Wool CoaT

This is one of those investment pieces you’ll have for a lifetime. The wool/cashmere blend is beautifully drapey and gorgeously tailored (styled here). It runs big so size down (I have xxs/xs) which will have plenty of room for me this year but still looks flattering and would look great belted over a cozy sweater. Everlane also made a gorgeous option this year with their recycled wool/nylon overcoat, and this belted recycled wool coat from Amour Vert is super chic.

Snow boots

These snow boots from Sorel are also in my round-up of the best winter boots. I have them in Elk and I recommend going a half size up (I go half size up in all Sorels). Sorel also came out with an updated, modern version of their Joan of Acrtic boot which I got in Sage, they’re GORGEOUS and I can’t wait to wear them this winter.

Black midi dress

I got this stretchy midi dress to wear to an event with Eileen Fisher last month and it’s the most comfortable thing ever. Perfect for layering in the winter over a turtleneck or under a cozy sweater. It’s super versatile for casual or dressy occasions and they have a beautiful silk version as well.

6 Winter Wardrobe Capsule Outfits

Wool Coat & Corduroys

Pair a wool coat with a knit sweater and corduroys, I love the combo of navy and camel in the outfit below.
Outfit details: Similar alpaca/wool coat and here, similar sweater, corduroys, similar ankle boots, leather bag.

Puffer Coat & Fisherman Sweater

I lived in my Patagonia Down With It Parka (small) last winter. It’s so toasty all you need is a light layer, like a cotton fisherman sweater and cozy brushed plaid scarf.
Outfit details: Cashmere beanie, Patagonia Down With It Parka, similar fisherman sweater, similar plaid scarf, skinny jeans

double breasted blazer and leggings

Style it casual or dressy, this oversized blazer from Everlane looks great with a fisherman sweater and leggings or wear it with a black midi dress and booties.
Outfit details: Turtleneck, fisherman sweater, medallion necklace, leggings, booties, sunglasses

turtleneck sweater and wool coat

Basically my uniform for the next few months, an oversized sweater, leggings and a drapey wool coat. I can’t wear anything with too much of a heel so these ankle booties are a great height.
Outfit details: Wool coat (xxs/xs), similar oversized sweater, faux leather leggings, ankle boots, headband, bag

wool coat, turtleneck sweater and jeans

I love light neutrals together especially in winter. A light gray coat looks beautiful with a creamy knit sweater and jeans.
Outfit details: Similar gray wool coat here and here, similar ribbed knit sweater, turtleneck, jeans, vintage belt

Fisherman sweater, cashmere beanie

This men’s fisherman sweater is one of the coziest knits I own. It’s thick and warm and will definitely keep you toasty all winter long. I usually wear it with skinny jeans, boot socks and winter boots.
Outfit details: Fisherman sweater (small), skinny jeans, boot socks, cashmere beanie

The Fall Capsule Wardrobe

I launched the fall capsule in early September and there’s lots of great pieces that work well into winter. You can check it out here and see how I’ve styled different pieces here.

The Main Capsule Wardrobe

I launched my first and main capsule in February of this year. This was meant to be a broader capsule of pieces that for the most part can be worn year round. A lot of them are also great paired with items from the winter capsule. You can check it out here.

Hi! My favourite of your winter capsule must be the cashmere hat, and I plan to knit many cashmere hats for myself, my kids and for christmas for my family. I would also have loved the comfy puffet coat to go with them here in cold Norway!

My favorite item: close call between the puffer jacket, Chelsea boots, and the wool coat. PUFFER is #1 for me ?

Love!! The fisherman sweater is a classic and so warm. Truly it’s a piece you could pass down to that little babe in your belly. One of my fave family photos is from the late 70s with my dad in a fisherman turtleneck and a tiny little me in his lap. And the Chelsea boots. I’m on my feet all day as a teacher and function is a must, as much as I try to look current.
