Maternity Friendly Fall Outfit Ideas

I remember, quite clearly, a month or so ago stating that I was going to hold off on buying maternity clothes as long as possible. LOL. I’m not sure why I had this hang up abut buying maternity, but I quickly changed my tune when I realized that I all I wanted was to be comfortable (and still look stylish). Actually, I tried belly bands and the elastic trick and for me, they were just horribly uncomfortable, so I decided to rethink how I get dressed, and to be open to more than what I’m used to wearing.

It has been interesting, and a bit frustrating at times, to learn how to dress my changing body. I must admit trying to shop eco-friendly/sustainable brands exclusively while pregnant has been even more challenging, and if I’m being honest I’ve cut myself some slack on that front, though I am still very mindful of it, and pay close attention to fabric content. Also, I didn’t want to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe, while I know this is temporary, I still wanted to have clothes I feel really good in, especially when a lot of days I just don’t feel that good at all.

I say all of this to say that if you too have been frustrated or at a loss for how to get dressed when you’re pregnant, you’re not alone, and I’m here to help (I hope). These maternity friendly fall outfit ideas will hopefully spark a little inspiration, and they’re not just for anyone expecting, you can totally recreate these outfits pregnant or not.

Jess Ann Kirby styles an ochre coat with a floral maxi dress for fall.

This Sezane dress is seriously so beautiful and so comfortable. This flowy and forgiving style is ideal for maternity and I’m pretty sure will easily take me through the rest of my pregnancy (I plan on wearing it to some parties and events I have this fall/winter). Long dresses with plenty of room in the chest and belly area are perfect for a growing bump (love this A-line silk maxi) but also styles you can wear beyond pregnancy. Stretchy fabrics are great, like this cotton Free People maxi dress. For colder months you can even throw on a pair of leggings underneath to stay warm.

Jess Ann Kirby loves faux leather leggings for a comfy and stylish maternity look.

I searched and searched (and tried on too many pairs to admit) for maternity faux leather leggings. So, I ended up with this pair that are very comfortable and will be great as we get into the holiday season. In addition, I read mixed reviews about the maternity Spanx faux leather leggings, but given how much I love their non-maternity pair, I decided to give them a try (I’ll report back). This striped top from Hatch is so comfy and definitely something I’ll wear beyond pregnancy, along with this Free People dolman quilted jacket that I had my eye on forever, until it sold out, so I vowed to scoop it up if it came back in stock.

Jess Ann Kirby stays warm in an oversized cashmere scarf, quilted jacket and faux leather leggings.

I love, love, love this cashmere turtleneck sweater dress from Everlane. It’s so cozy and has plenty of room (to grow) in the chest and belly area. As it gets colder I can wear it with leggings (these are definitely a favorite). The v-neck midi style from Everlane is also very comfortable. I just styled both of these in this IGTV.

I always love your honesty and glad you cut yourself some slack. You look amazing in all of these Fall outfits. I also think there is a white space in eco-friendly maternity clothes.

Hey, Jess! Love all of these outfits. Question about the UO jacket—is it pretty warm?

Hi Megan, it’s warm but not for a really chilly day. If it’s windy and below 50 I’d need something warmer. I’m also ALWAYS cold sooooo. Haha.

Everything about this gets five stars. As I got bigger, and bigger, FreePeople has become a go to. Their stuff is naturally roomier and I’ve gotten a few pregnancy friendly pieces that I’ll be able to keep wearing post pregnancy. Just a heads up from week 37 over here. Xo

Ah you’re so close! I was on Free People’s website the other day and noticed they have so many nice roomy styles. I think leggings and sweaters will ultimately be my uniform towards the end, especially in January 🙂

You look amazing in that Sezane jumper- are you in the XS or S? I’m ordering this bad boy and dig the not-too-fitted look on you!
