I can’t believe we are finally here. I remember the day we talked about doing this addition like it was yesterday. I had just found out I was pregnant and I looked at Craig and said, we should turn the garage into a master bedroom. His reply, “I’ve been saying that since we bought this place.” So we were on the same page, haha. The reality is our garage was just storage and our yard in the back is big enough for a shed to hold tools, bikes, etc. I’ll get a bit more into the process in another post, today I want to talk about what we chose for paint and primer. Craig has worked in almost every aspect of construction and if there’s anyone who knows the importance of painting – both the process and the product, it’s him. For years we’ve used KILZ as a primer, including in our existing master bathroom and on the exterior of the house, but we’ve never used their paint before.
We teamed up with KILZ to use their KILZ 3® Premium Interior and Exterior Primer in the new master bedroom and bathroom. It’s fast drying, low odor, very low VOC, and water-based which makes it ideal for our humid and wet climate. It’s also mildew resistant so ideal for a bathroom setting. It dries so quickly we were able to prime and paint the entire space in four days. The nice thing about the primer is you only need to do one coat of paint afterwards.
For paint colors we wanted to do a warm and neutral white. In the bathroom we went with KILZ Complete Coat® Himalaya in Satin. It’s a gorgeous creamy warm white. We wanted a slightly more neutral color in the bedroom. Our goal was a barely there tan/white. So we mixed Himalaya with White Wing and it came out to the perfect color (we did a 1:1 ratio). We decided to do the walls, trim and doors all in the same color. Wait what? Yes, probably not a traditional choice, but our whole goal with this space was to make it feel bright and open, and I actually love that everything is the same color and finish.

Craig did a lot of the hard work when he plastered the walls, so there was minimal sanding and prep work before painting. The great thing about KILZ 3® Premium Primer is it will help cover any imperfections you’re dealing with and reduce the number of coats you need to do afterwards. Here’s what we used:
Materials
- KILZ 3® Premium Primer (to prime walls, trim, doors and ceiling in bedroom and bathroom)
- KILZ Complete Coat® in Himalaya on walls, trim and doors in bathroom
- KILZ Complete Coat® in White Wing mixed 1:1 Himalaya on walls, trim and doors in bedroom
- Sandpaper (for sanding trim and walls)
- Paint brushes, paint trays and rollers (small and large)
I love how this space turned out and the calming look and feel of these creamy neutral paint colors. What do you guys think?

It’s such a nice white. I’m so happy with how it turned out and it’s also very low odor, the smell was gone after a day!
The space looks absolutely amazing and I love the colors y’all went with. They are beautiful and definitely create huge a bright, airy space. Cannot wait to see more of this space! Craig killed it!

Thank you Laura! So excited to share more. xx
I just love everything about this room! Craig did a fabulous job! Enjoy your own B&B! Love the quilt too!! So pristine. I’m going to clean my bedroom now . Lol
Thanks Lynn!
Beautiful and pristine Jess. I love it and that quilt. This is really off topic but when you went to St. Pete and had that round Cognac Brahmin Cognac Topsail leather bag on with the pretty white dress, did you wear it much? I just got it on sale and it is beautiful but a bit heavy for a small bag but I loved it on you. Keep or not? Lol
I love how the room turned out! It looks so bright and welcoming, I am sure it feels even more cozy with the furniture in it. Do you mind sharing the color/stain of the floors? I am trying to stain a dresser and this is exactly what I am going for!
Looks amazing! In the preview pic is that the Samsung Frame tv? If so how do you like it?
Thank you! Yes it is and you are reminding me I need to do a blog post review of the Samsung Frame TV. We actually have two. I have feelings about it, haha. Overall yes I love it.
I already receive your emails, Thank heaven!! I am such a Huge fan of your products!! And, YES, I do like her primer and paint project for her bedroom – I KNOW that she picked white, I would have picked a much more serine color, warmer but, I give her a lot of credit for doing all of it herself!! I have a Backporch that had the roof fall in and, with the old, disgusting insulation to boot!! I had the roof revealed and a new ceiling put in but, unfortunately, I still have to wash that disgusting insulation off the walls and then I can paint. But, I also have to put in, in some spots, new wood trim, etc. I know I’ll be using KILZ Primer and Paint; in fact I know the color I’m going to purchase, the problem is with me!! I have yet to get the Motivation it’s definitely going to take me to wash all those walls, etc.!! Like I said, I give her a lot of credit for getting her bedroom done all by herself!!
Your post is awesome. I must tell you that you put a great effort into posting because everything you write here in sequence. So I don’t have any questions but one about this project! I have an orbital sander for sanding, so do I need sandpaper anymore?
