My Favorite Clean Hair Care Products

Jess Ann Kirby shares her favorite clean hair care products for silky and shiny hair

I wrote this post about a year ago and since then have tried some additional products that I really love so wanted to update with a few new favorites.

My Favorite Clean Hair Care Products

I’ve tested a lot of clean hair care brands and products over the last few years, and have finally landed on some favorites. Before we get into the products I love, here’s a few notes about my general hair care routine. I typically wash my hair about 3 times a week. I alternate products as I think it helps prevent build-up. I almost never blow dry my hair, I wash at night and let it air dry (my texture is fine, mostly straight and thick). I don’t take any hair specific supplements but I do take probiotics and plant-based collagen peptides which I think improve hair health. I recently ordered an organic shampoo bar as I’d love to be able to eliminate some packaging waste so I’ll be sure to share my experience with that. Would love to know if there’s any other clean hair care brands you’ve tried and liked. Let me know in the comments!

Shampoo

Innersense Hydrating Cream Hairbath Shampoo (use code JESSANNKIRBY15 for 15% off) – I’m a big fan of Innersense and their hydrating shampoo does not disappoint. It has gentle, non-toxic, plant-based ingredients, and cleans well without drying hair. It’s great for a sensitive/itchy scalp and has a nice lather in the shower (make sure to use lukewarm water when washing hair).

The Seaweed Bath Co. Detox Clarifying Shampoo – This is a great affordable non-toxic beauty brand. I use this shampoo once a week to get rid of product build up. It’s really gentle on the scalp and makes your hair feel super clean.

Conditioner

Innersense Color Radiance Conditioner (use code JESSANNKIRBY15 for 15% off) – Particularly great for color treated hair it helps prevent frizz and won’t fade your salon color. Apply this from mid-length to ends and leave on for a few minutes.

Styling Products

Innersense I Create Waves Spray (use code JESSANNKIRBY15 for 15% off) – I’ve tested a lot of salt sprays and I like this one because it gives nice texture without getting sticky or making hair feel dry.

Rahua Hydration Detangler (use JESSANNKIRBY15 for 15% off) – This is a really good heat protectant that I spray on damp hair and then let it air dry. It also has morete oil, a natural UV protectants to help your salon color last longer.

Captain Blankenship Dry Shampoo – I’ve tried so many different clean dry shampoos and this one is definitely my favorite. It doesn’t leave behind any residue and gives my hair volume and texture.

Treatments/Masks

Olaplex – This is a really good at home treatment strengthening treatment, especially for color treated hair. It makes hair stronger and shinier, I use it once a month.

Tools

Wet Brush – Makes brushing your hair enjoyable. It feels great on your scalp and detangles without pulling or breaking your strands.

Kristin Ess Pivoting Wand – I use this for easy beach waves and it’s hard to beat for a $60 curling wand.

t3 Wand – This is a great combo curling wand set. I tend to use this more often when my hair is longer because I alternate with different attachments.

I’ve been looking for a clean shampoo and conditioner that I love for forever. The best clean conditioner I’ve tried is Acure Vivacious Volume Peppermint Conditioner. I haven’t tried their shampoo yet, but the conditioner leaves my hair really soft without weighing it down.

Calia Naturals has wonderful clean and cruelty free hair products. I love the purify shampoo and conditioner for dry hair and leave in conditioner. There is definitely a period of time that it takes for your hair to adjust to the clean product but it’s so worth it. @calianaturals on IG

I’m an air-dryer and pretty low maintenance when it comes to hair. I’ve moved more into mousse (I use John Master’s Organics) to help style my hair…I apply it when wet. I used to use sea salt sprays, but haven’t in a while. When you apply yours do you spray it on when your hair is wet, after your hair has dried, or both? I just cut my hair just below my jaw and I love how much life my hair has and I’m wanting to enhance that the best I can…while not working too hard to do so, ha!

Yes I usually spray it when my hair is damp (almost dry) then when it’s dry I might add more and occasionally add dry shampoo (powder) for texture. I am an air dryer too.

Thanks for sharing all these! Thanks to you I’m well on my way to 100% clean beauty! Credo Beauty hosted a Clean Beauty Summit a few weeks back in SF & it was incredible all the brands in attendance and the great stories they shared (and samples!!). I am really loving Innersense products (hair bath & cond plus styling balm for wavy days) as well as Ursa Major (go easy daily shampoo/ cond – v hydrating!!), Rahua (volume shampoo/ cond & Himalayan salt spray), Reverie (shampoo & cond – great swap for Aesop, as it smells divine) and Captain Blankenship (shimmer spray) for my fine, long Swavy balayaged hair!!
