6 Must Visit Providence Coffee Shops

To say we’re caffeine fans would be putting it lightly. I’m a big fan of black tea, and Jess’s coffee is as essential to her day as breathing oxygen, seriously. Is it just me or does anyone else feel way smarter after their first cup? Just a short drive from Newport (or long depending on who you ask) Providence is home to some of the best coffee shops around. Whether it be a dirty chai, a latte or even just black—these are our go-to Providence coffee shops. And if there’s any we missed, let us know in the comments.

Duck & Bunny: A real ladies-who-brunch (no, really they offer my favorite meal every day) type of spot, this restaurant is just as charming as its name. Tufted high back chairs, marble topped tables and crystal chandeliers all help create an elegant but cozy environment where you can indulge in their decadent food. Besides offering a wide selection of tea and coffee, the menu has delicious desserts like cupcakes, pies, cakes and savory fare too. Their crepe menu is extensive and full of unexpected combos like a smoked salmon sushi roll or a brie, pear and scallion crepe.

Seven Stars Bakery: If you’re as serious about bread as Oprah in her Weight Watchers commercial, Seven Stars doesn’t disappoint. Challah, sourdough, whole wheat, focaccia, olive, baguette and even a Vermont Cheddar cheese bread—there’s so many homemade options to choose from. They don’t take coffee lightly either, with a rigorously trained barista staff that more than knows their way around an espresso machine. Don’t skimp on their baked goods, the almond chocolate croissants are one of my all time favorites!

L’Artisan: This might just be the perfect place to hang out for the day if you’ve got your laptop and some work to do. Not only do they have free wifi, but their coffee selection is on par with cafes you can visit in Europe—they’ve earned the prestigious Illy artisti del gusto designation. One of only 75 cafes in the country to hold that honor. Feeling famished? Their varied selection of panini, wraps, salads, craft beers, wines and even Lebanese pies offer plenty of choices for lunch. I’d also love to point out that they have two of my all time favorite breakfast options: a bagel/lox and croque matin on the menu, which not many places do. It’s a little taste of New York and Paris in Providence.
9 Wayland Square

Pastiche: A bad day gets better with a visit to Pastiche. That’s how amazing the European-inspired confections are here. Even the storefront is sweet without being saccharine. It’s the ideal spot to indulge with a wide selection of cakes, pies, tarts, cookies, tea cakes, brownies, lemon squares, muffins, scones, crumb cakes and macaroons (the selection is huge my friends). My stomach is growling just thinking about all of the options. The beauty of Pastiche is you don’t have to commit to a full size dessert either. You can order pies and cakes whole or by the slice. They’re  open late, so pop in after dinner on date night for something decadent. The working fireplace sets such a romantic and cozy vibe you’ll close the place down hanging out.

The Shop: Committed to feeding the locals with quality ingredients they have direct trade coffee, dairy from grass-fed cows and pastries from local bakeries. Their menu has got some tasty options on it including a steel-oat and buckwheat porridge, seasonal quiches and an apple cheddar corn muffin. They even offer gluten-free options!
460 Wickenden Street

Bolt Coffee at The Dean: Nestled in the Dean Hotel this sleek little cafe is the perfect place to spend the afternoon with friends or if you’re solo their incredibly friendly baristas will make you feel right at home. Oversized pendant lights, clean black wood tables, fresh flowers, intricate tile work and billboard-style lettering on the walls creates a cool and sophisticated atmosphere. You won’t want to leave, I promise. The menu may be small but it is mighty. All of their drinks are crafted with care, including their mochas made with Mast Brothers Chocolate and their signature matcha with fresh grapefruit juice, one of Jess’s favorites.
