We just rescued a Chihuahua mix three weeks ago… we are still in the adjustment period and we are dealing with some separation anxiety and resource guarding. We are looking into training now, but I wish we had done it before we adopted her. Great tips!

We also worked with our trainer when adopting our second dog. She had us take the two of them on a long walk together to see how they interacted on neutral ground. This was very helpful if the shelter/rescue group allows. She had us do the same when we brought our second home and enter the house as a “pack”.
